A bonus is a commercial instrument. It is offered because, on average and across many accounts, it returns more to the operator than it costs. Reading the terms carefully is useful; treating a bonus as an advantage is not.

What the arithmetic says

Clearing a wagering requirement has an expected cost equal to the turnover multiplied by the house edge of the games played. A $500 bonus at 35× on the bonus alone requires $17,500 in stakes; at a 4% edge the expected cost of that play is $700. The bonus is worth less than the play it demands. This is true of almost every offer in this database, and it is the reason the scoring method measures how hard terms are to satisfy rather than how much they promise.

Before claiming an offer

  • Set a deposit limit in the account area first. Limits applied after a bonus is active usually cannot be lowered until it expires.
  • Check the stake ceiling. A single stake above it commonly voids the bonus and every win from it, and the breach is detected automatically.
  • Check whether the game you intend to play contributes. Table games often count at 5% or 10%, which multiplies the required turnover accordingly.
  • Decide in advance whether you will forfeit the bonus to withdraw. Deciding mid-session rarely goes well.

Age and jurisdiction

Online gambling is restricted to adults of legal age in their jurisdiction, which is 18 or 21 depending on the territory, and is unlawful in some territories entirely.
